Pondering the price of gas

by Laurel on November 12, 2008

So a new president was elected recently. It goes without saying I'm still giddy, can't quite believe it actually.
But what has been on my mind recently is the price of gas. I am just as happy as the next guy that gas has dropped below $2 a gallon here.

At one point this summer, I was working one day a week just to cover the cost of gas to get to work. I don't know what is more depressing about that fact – the cost of the gas or how little money I was making at that particular job. :)

So, gas prices are dropping like a stone. They are very nearly at the level they were when Clinton left office. Interesting how that works. Probably the idea of a Democrat in office effects the price of gas, in truth, very little. But I am enjoying the symbolism anyway.

Unfortunately, I am equally troubled by the falling price of gas. That part of me who understands our motivation for development of renewable, cleaner and cheaper energy sources came largely from the gouging of our pocketbooks fears the fever for new energies has dropped as quickly as the price of gas itself. Will the commitment of the new president to invest in new sources of energy evaporate given the state of our economy? We have so many problems to fix, so many bills to pay and so little money to do it with. If gas is cheap, problem solved. Right? Sure…till the price goes up again. Sure…till the next terrorist attack. Sure…till the supply runs out.

On the bright side, the polar ice caps are melting…soon the residents of the east coast and west coast will be able to take advantage of the energy efficiencies found in canoe travel. :D
